CNN.com - Bush hits road topromote Social Security plan - Feb 3, 2005

Just like invading Iraq was a convenient distraction a little while ago, I strongly suspect that mucking with Social Security is the brainchild of some favored Bush insider.

The answer was Social Security. The question was: Where are we going to find a humongous captive audience market to increase profits available to our major corporate campaign donors through the stock market.

it's also a distraction from Iraq/the Middle East. You know that old woman who swallowed a fly? and then a frog? and then a cat?

I'm not an economist, but I believe that social security isn't exactly doomed, though it may not be as ripe as I would like it to be should I grow old before I croak. Framing it as giving younger workers ownership options, well, I watched my fortunes rise and fall in the stock zit a few years ago. While accounting practices have changed, greed has not and I'm sure there have been ways found around such little regulation remaining after four years of leave 'em be governance that will make sure the little guys, the younger workers, give all their money to the big fish who will keep it, outfit bathrooms with $6000 shower curtains, and perhaps walk down golf-club incarceration if it comes to that.

I also don't WANT Walmart to lower my prices. I think paying lower prices for junk I don't need just screws the guys making stuff I do need by forcing them to swallow lower profits. How thin do we need to stretch the world's resources before everything snaps?

rant off. It's been one of those days.
